Back when I used to ride a bike I never wore a helmet in town. I'd rather have better hearing and vision and avoid the wreck than have a helmet save my life in a wreck where I was badly injured. I did often wear a helmet while on the highway, different driving conditions.

OTOH I graduated with a boy who was going to Annapolis Navel Academy. He rode a 350cc cycle to his summer job before heading off to the Academy. Early morning, late summer, tall corn and he ran a stop sign on a country road and was killed. Docs said he might have lived if he had worn a helmet. I doubt that, his entire right leg was was still smashed into the bike when we picked the bike up later in the day.
