Notice that Bush has no idea of the fate of the 102 when he signed up for training. He also has no guarantee that he won't receive training in another aircraft such as the F-4. Signing up to fly jets in the ANG in now way keeps you out of combat or danger period. If you want out of danger you go Surface Warfare Officer. The overseas F-102s have no bearing on where his unit was sent. While there is combat in Vietnam, Bush doesn't know where the next combat area might be. Perhaps he would be flying against Soviet Migs over Cuba. Who knows. There is no correlation between flying F-102 and being out of combat or danger. All the ANG has to do is send him and other pilots to C-130 training and they could go to Vietnam.
