The Nevada politicians are not innocent. They always embraced the test site, probably a worst environmental headache, all did, Reps, Dems,,including Reid, Bryan, etal, all national Democrats for the last 50 years.. Because of JOBS.. I once talked to Reid about the military take over of Nevada at Dem fundraiser about 10-12 years ago but he just walked away.. He first asked me what I thought was the biggest problem in Nevada. I told him.. But I digress. So nationwide, people thought if Nevada liked testing so well, first open air, (UGH, read Terry Tempest William's accounts about down winders ) then they would by logic accept nuke waste.. In the same general area. But all at once the LV politicians that liked Mercury for the test site jobs decided they didn't want a NUKE DUMP just a 100 miles from LV.. BAD, Bad publicity... Who would visit a place where they are storing nuke sh!t so close..Who would visit a dump for a vacation..? THAT'S THE MAIN REASON.... IMAGE.... Not environmental.. I once proposed that they store the waste on the old test site since it was so f'ed up, hot, etc. and it wasn't needed anymore since the test ban... But NO.. They had to pick a new site 30 miles away from the dump or so.. Well, I figured out why they didn't want to close the test site which was already f'ed up and turn it into nuke storage.. They WANT to USE it again.. <BNG>.. Another reason I oppose it is something that is never talked about much.. That is IF a PERMANENT national nuke storage area is designated.. WE as a society are more apt to build more nuclear generating facilities BECAUSE we have SAFE? storage.. The cities and states back east, all over, will think TWICE to approve them IF they have to store their own sh!t in their OWN back yards.. So that's my take on this issue.. It's just not as simple as people make it and nobody is innocent. IMO, the environmetal considerations from a Nevada politician's POV are NIL.. It's all about IMAGE... BTW, I oppose it as I did testing for the REAL reasons as stated above which are truly environmental and social..
