Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has suggested the alert -- right after the Democratic convention -- was timed for political effect, but Homeland Secretary Tom Ridge denies that, saying, "We don't do politics in the Department of Homeland Security."


Tom Ridge: "We must understand that the kind of information available to us today is the result of the president's leadership in the war against terror."

Is that not a blatantly political statement?
