It's rare, but not unheard of for options to be adjusted when unusual changes to the company's capital structure take place. A normal, scheduled dividend would never impact the option price, as this would typically be expected to be "priced in."

In the Microsoft case, they're going to adjust the options down to reflect the unusual, one-time distribution.
