the Vietnam war could be interpreted as a religious war insofar as anti-Communism is viewed as a US "religion" up to 1989....

That is an interesting point. Anti-Communism and Americanism have evolved into something of a religious nature over the decades of the Cold War. There's no way our government could have pulled off such a con-job as Viet Nam without this religious-like mentality. The American religion has even outlived the fall of communism. Why else would people join the military year after year, even after decades of obvious neglect of the troops? I mean, if you want to get screwed over in life, a sure way of doing so is by joining the military. You know a religious type of mentality (somewhat akin to facism) has overtaken the American people when the government can propose the most assine, most anti-democractic, most regressive policies and still receive the unbending support of the American people. The last four years has certainly been an interesting lesson in the control of the public mind, and how apt people are to support whatever policy is proposed on a leap of faith that the government knows best (religious).
