MRV Announces Telco NEBS Compliant Line of Console Servers LX-8000S Series Offers Security and Performance of Linux-Based Operating System
8/4/2004 9:01:00 AM

CHATSWORTH, Calif., and SAN FRANCISCO, LINUX WORLD 2004, Aug 4, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (MRVC), a leading provider of scalable network infrastructure equipment and optical components for metro and Fiber-to-the-Premise solutions, today announced the LX-8000S family of NEBS compliant console servers featuring a Linux-based operating system tuned for optimal performance, security and reliability.

The LX-8000S series of console servers is designed for the management of telecommunications equipment, blade centers and computer clusters in environments that demand a secure and converged remote presence solution with the reliability and survivability of NEBS Level 3 certification. The LX-8000S enables secure connectivity and access to any serial device or equipment console port, real-time visibility of remote site and equipment status, and the ability to immediately respond to remote events or conditions over IP networks all in a single box. It provides complete serial connectivity, console, power and alarm management capabilities all in a single box.

More Control, Lower Costs, Greater Flexibility

By extending serial and console port access and facilitating alarm and power management capabilities over IP networks, the LX-8000S gives the user visibility and control from virtually anywhere. This provides network administrators with the means to proactively respond to remote site management needs, ensuring maximum network uptime and service availability. The advanced feature set of the LX-8000S allows users to substantially lower operational costs by implementing centrally managed lights-out installations without sacrificing management and control.

MRV has designed the LX-8000S to be software upgradeable, offering investment protection with the ability to meet future console management needs. Future software releases will incorporate all of the features available in the LX-8000S today, including the complete set of alarm management capabilities. Service providers and large enterprises also benefit from the flexibility of the Linux-based IROS operating system featured in the LX-8000S. Its open architecture provides them the capability to customize a solution that is simple to deploy and non-disruptive to their current operational procedures.

"The LX-8000S is the remote presence solution that telco and enterprise customers have been waiting for," said Chris Tenes, VP of Sales for MRV Communications. "It meets today's console, sensor and power management needs with the capacity, scalability and flexibility to address even the most demanding future requirements. The LX-8000S is the right investment for anyone looking to maximize the availability of their network with keeping operational costs under control."

Product Details

The LX-8000S series is available in two base models: the 20-port LX-8020S and 40-port LX-8040S, each with single or dual AC or DC power supplies and an optional internal modem. All LX-8000S systems are powered by 32-Bit RISC embedded processors with embedded co-processors that enable the execution of an extensive software feature set with processing power to spare. Like the LX-4000S series, the LX-8000S series is driven by the In-Reach Operating System (IROS), a Linux-based operating system.

"The advantages of utilizing a Linux-based kernel are clear and compelling," stated Mary Gruninger, General Manager for MRV. "It not only enables us to deliver the type of engineered performance, reliability and flexibility our customers demand, but also benefits from the continuous development efforts of the open source community. Because of this we are able to respond to the needs of our customers more quickly and effectively."

The LX-8000S is specially designed for applications requiring secure console or serial port management along with power control. It offers the industry's most comprehensive security features, including per port password protection, RADIUS, Secure Shell v2.0, SecureID, PPP PAP/CHAP, PPP dial-back, on-board database and others.

The LX8000S software offers the sophisticated Cluster Control and Configuration (C3) feature for LX deployments in large networks. With this capability a cluster of up to 1000 LX series console servers may be configured and controlled without a single point of failure. It is an invaluable tool for managing software updates in a large network.

The rack space requirements of telco applications were an important design consideration for the LX-8000S. The result is a well thought out, highly compact system that has all its primary connectors and power supplies at the rear of the unit, and the LEDs, modem (telco) and diagnostic ports on the front.

The LX-8000S series console servers further solidify MRV's position as the leading provider of secure and robust remote presence solutions in the industry today.
