<the destruction of a South Korean airliner that had wandered off course in 1983>

False. My brother was a 747 captain during those days and explained that 747s do not wander off course. Especially when piloted by hand-picked top military pilots as per the guy who was flying that aircraft. He was the guy who flew the President around. Especially over BIG RED LINES which say - "Don't fly here or they will shoot you down", or some such. It was obviously a deliberate provocation and there was no expectation that the USSR would shoot it down.

There are transponders and radio channels and both the 'wandering off course' and shooting down were decisions taken deliberately.

The aircraft was delayed before take off, I believe to get timing right for satellites to be in the right place to monitor the situation.

But the article is right that the USA didn't change the USSR, Gorby and co did.

<Reagan came quickly to recognize that Gorbachev's goals, far from being traditional, were downright revolutionary. He also saw that the transformation Gorbachev had in mind for his country would, if it came about, serve American interests. >

Quickly? That was quickly? It took ages for the mindless dinosaurs in the USA to figure out that things were different. It was the USA stuck in the old ways, not the USSR. Supporting Afghanistan Islamic Jihadists against Gorby and the USSR doesn't look so clever now that there's a hole where the Twin Towers used to be.

Reagan to his credit realized that Gorby was the one who made the changes and Reagan's role was as a bystander, though he could have quit poking the borax via the Mujahadeen. We don't hear too much whining from the USA these days about Chechen insurrectionists being cruelly repressed by the Evil Empire. Americans realize, belatedly, that supporting the IRA murderers and Mujahadeen 'freedom fighters' isn't necessarily a good thing for them. The IRA and Libyans and others worked in well together. The Lockerbie attack for example, included a lot of Americans. I should ask Google for IRA Libya links. Bingo...a couple of seconds later, first in the list: megastories.com
