Then what happens to, say, crack cocaine? If you outlaw it, we're right back to where we are now: an illegal substance being demanded and the illegality raises the price to the point where the demand is satisfied.

Maybe we have to say it's unfortunate that some people will kill themselves with drugs, but the consequences of attempting to ban them are pretty bad too (think Prohibition, gang wars, drive by shootings, dead innocent bystanders,....). And maybe try to keep their use down by education and ads as is being done with tobacco.
