05 Aug 2004 10:15 GMT German June manufacturing orders down 3.5 pct vs May; consensus down 0.2 pct

FRANKFURT (AFX) - German manufacturing orders fell a seasonally-adjusted 3.5 pct in June from May, according to preliminary data from the Economy and Labour Ministry.

Economists had forecast on average a fall of 0.2 pct month-on-month.

In May, manufacturing orders rose a revised 1.5 pct from April.

The ministry said the drop in orders in June was due to a below-average number of large orders, but added it expects the June figure to be revised upwards.

It said foreign orders fell 6.5 pct in June, while domestic orders fell 0.8 pct.

It added that demand for investment goods posted the strongest decline, down 5.0 pct month-on-month. Orders for consumer goods fell 3.6 pct, while orders for intermediate inputs fell 1.9 pct.

On a two-monthly basis, orders rose a seasonally-adjusted 0.6 pct in May/June from March/April, with foreign orders up 2.3 pct and domestic orders down 0.9 pct.
