The average Republican voter, in their heart love this country and love the troops. They take pride in honoring troops for their bravery. Troops like Sen. Cleland, Sen. McCain and Sen. Kerry. As they see the Bush and his team vigourously insult and denigrate these men for their bravery, they get turned away from Bush. So with every passing day of those ads attacking Kerry's Vietnam record, Bush would slip in the polls of "most likely voters" since these folks are not going to go and vote much less go and vote for Bush.

So once Kerry starts to move up, Bush will find it very hard to close the gap even if there is a October surprise of OBL arrest or a terrorist attack on US soil.
