I imagine the book was properly vetted by the Publisher because there are strong libel laws in this country

No, not in the US. You must be thinking of Britain. If you are a public figure in the US, the libel law is extremely weak. It's not enough to show the information is harmful and false and was known to be false; you basically have to prove malicious intent, which is very difficult to prove. I'm sure one of the lawyers on thread could fill in the details.

I imagine the book was properly vetted by the Publisher because there are strong libel laws in this country. Doubt the Bushes would have let any falsehoods stand.

If you are talking about the German money/American Banks in 1942, there was a lot of it. It was frozen. It was perfectly legitimate to be doing business with Germany before WWII and all of Wall Street was doing a lot of it. The book in question tried to smear the Bush family with it.

BTW, our libel laws are a joke. If you are a "public figure," almost anything can be said about you.

Absolutely! Couldn't agree more with you.

...Oh. I thought you were talking about Unfit for Command by John O'Neill.

Paging back, I see you're talking about something having to do with Bush's grandfather.

My mistake.
