Sure it is. But American politics is going through that part of the cycle where it is no-holds barred and the slightest blemish is enough to sink someone. Ok, it is one thing if you are as dumb as Gary Hart and dare the press to find something when you are actually engaged in something they could use against you. Look at Gore in 2000, he got pilloried over things he didn't say or do. True, there probably were enough of the ones he said or did to do the job, but there were things that were flat made up...

Jim,
it's President Bush and his four years as president against Kerry's primary campaign theme of four months in Vietnam.

It does matter. Unless Kerry wants to point out to the voters something else he is proud of like his 20 years in the senate.
