Same in California. The entire rail project (can't remember the exact number, say $15bn) was going to take several years but the entire amount of new car sales in California over the same time period was several times that.

A friend who was writing for a magazine on bonds cornered the Transportation Secretary in the parking lot in Sacramento outside the legislature after a discussion. Basically the car lobby had the bucks to get him reelected. The rail group didn't stand a chance.

Now you know what Arnie means when he says special interests.

Remember what you said about wanting to go somewhere fast? I've spent many a morning fogged in in San Francisco, on my cell canceling appointments and wishing there were a bullet train.

There are other things besides prices but those 'externalities' are often not priced properly, if at all.
