Further, there's no doubt that, with present population trends remaining as they are, the West, and not only Europe, will be predominately non-white, non-Christian, non-Jewish, non-whatever at the end of this century, or even before it. That upsets many people. Well, those people will be dead in 20, 30, or 50 years... and all of us will be no more in 80 years... The passage of generations will sweeten the demographic pill. After all, Europe as it is today would be viewed as a bastardized, degenerated monstrosity by European elites of the early XXth century... If European intellectuals from the late XIXth-/early XXth- century Europe could come back from the dead they'd just scoff at Europeans worrying about the year 2050 and beyond... They would say that Europe as it stands today is finished already!! Europeans of yore used to live in world completely dominated by Europe's heavies --France, the UK, Germany. Theirs was a colonial universe ruled by and for Europe and challenged by a pushy newcomer, the U.S. The only "immigration problem" they could conceive of was the emigration of Europeans to the Americas, Australia, etc. not that of assimilating "monkeys" from the colonies into the European, lily-white sanctuary! Yet, as I pointed out, those Europeans are no more, and their successors --be they French, British, German,...-- have pliantly, if grudgingly, adapted to a world order wherein Europe has devolved to "junior" status. Now, I don't mean that's a positive outcome per se. There is no reason to rejoice at the fade-out of European/Western civilization, but, likewise, there is no reason to mourn Europe's colonialism and tyranny. All in all, I expect Europe to meet the same fate as Byzantium, that is, a gradual morphing into a new, hybrid civilization....
