We are aware there is too much pollution, but a scorched earth greenie policy ain't gonna cut it.

In Bush's defense, the U.S. is taking some real measures to clean up our environment and reduce CO2. The new hybrids are far cleaner than older cars. And Detroit is also introducing California cars that are 99% cleaner than current cars. Those are real moves in the right direction.

My main criticism of Bush and the Republican approach is that they use the jobs vs. environment arguement too much, and are too slow to adapt to new technologic innovations. They are often protectionists for old polluting industries.

Jobs disappear and are created for all sorts of reasons. We've probably had many more jobs disappear over the past 4 years due to things like outsourcing overseas and other macro-economic factors like free trade than something like environmental protection. Other new jobs are created by environmental regulation. My grandfather came to America in the very early part of the 20th century intending to make his fortune as a blacksmith, little did he know the automobile would soon make his profession irrelevant. There's always going to be jobs for those who want to work, you just might have to retrain yourself for a new profession.

In any case, for national security and environmental reasons, the U.S. should use the latest technology to clean up our environment and at least attempt to comply with the Kyoto protocols. Clean coal has been proven workable and should be implemented. New power plant technologies like the recently perfected dual phase technologies that use the exhaust heat from the initial electrical production phase to generate more electricity while reducing pollutants in the process should be introduced on a grand scale. Wind and solar should be promoted. Fuel cells should be promoted. Even nuclear should be considered as an option.
