They completed the research and found the 80-mpg goal for a prototype "is somewhat moot" because while the program had met all its milestones including an 80 mpg vehicle, it was proving especially tough to meet the final one: getting the cost down to be competitive with that of normal cars.

The problem with oil sands is that it takes huge amount of energy to extract them...it's a big problem.

I'll look for background on Bush's move to kill research and ease mileage standards..

anyone else out there have this info?
