That's because the 287-page bound manuscript, culled from the Kerry/Edwards Web site and introduced by Boston Globe reporter Michael Kranish, won't be published, after all, by PublicAffairs. Instead, the New York publisher said yesterday, it'll bring out an authorized edition of the Democratic duo's personal campaign manifesto. "Our Plan for America," subtitled "Stronger at Home, Respected in the World," is a $12.95 oversize paperback due out by Labor Day. PublicAffairs publisher Peter Osnos said the Kerry/Edwards campaign licensed the company to do the book - free of charge - and won't benefit from sales. PublicAffairs assumes all costs and stands to reap potential profits as it distributes the book more widely than the pols could have done on their own. Osnos called it a "total arm's length" arrangement, worked out after it became clear last weekend that Kerry/Edwards planned to release a campaign blueprint in book form. "I said to them, why don't we do it?" Osnos recalled of his contact with communications director Stephanie Cutter and other senior staffers. Osnos added, "This is their book." Besides offering the duo's ideas for the military, economy, jobs and such, it'll also include their biographies and speeches at the Democratic National Convention. Osnos characterized "Our Plan for America" as a direct descendant of "Putting People First," the 1992 campaign book of Bill Clinton and Al Gore. It, too, was issued by a commercial publisher, Times Books, then a part of Random House, and spent 10 weeks on The New York Times best-seller list. Osnos was publisher of Times Books at the time. He anticipates a 50,000-copy first printing for "Our Plan." Kerry's "A Call to Service" (Penguin) and Edwards' "Four Trials" (Simon & Schuster) are also in print. It was unclear yesterday if the Bush-Cheney campaign or the President himself, who published "A Charge to Keep" in 1999, plans a book this year.
