(SMY: TSX), an international provider of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) hardware solutions and consulting services today announces that it has begun production of its new multi-protocol, multi-regional UHF reader, capable of reading Class 0 and Class 0+ tag protocols. These Class 0 protocols are deemed important to the EPC plans specified by the Wal*Mart's RFID compliance initiative with its top 100 suppliers, subject to begin in January, 2005. Wal*Mart has stated that it will accept Class 0, Class 0+ and Class 1 tags that were under development as standards for the RFID industry's first major supply chain compliance initiative. SAMSys adds this new version of the UHF MP9320 V2.7 reader to its current RFID reader family that supports Class 1, ISO 18000-6A, ISO 18000-6B, Philips UCODE 1.19, EM 4222 and Intellitag. "The introduction of the SAMSys Class 0/0+ reader allows end users to employ other sources of supply for Class 0 readers and tags. Open standards are important, but the commercial benefits regarding tags conforming to standards only materialize when there are multiple suppliers. This multi-protocol reader enables users choosing Class 0 to employ tags from both Matrics and Impinj" stated James "Tres" Wiley, President and COO. "SAMSys pioneered the concept of multi-frequency, multi-protocol readers. It only made sense to add this important protocol to our long list of UHF tags that we support." In addition to the ability to read the Matrics Class 0 tag, SAMSys has been in development with Impinj to both read and write information to their Class 0+ tag technology, which conforms with the EPC Class 0 specification and supports field programming of the 96-bit EPC code as well as user data. "The new SAMSys reader, in conjunction with Impinj's high performance rewritable tags, constitutes a complete, high quality RFID system ready for pilots." said Dimitri Desmons, Impinj's Director of RFID products. "Not only will SAMSys readers with Impinj tags provide reliable, consistent operation with unprecedented range and write speed, but the system's Class 0+ features will enable customers to get a jump on the write functionality anticipated from the Gen2 standard." This flexibility to work with both the Impinj and Matrics Class 0 tag protocols will provide users more choices and more equipment investment options as they plan for the adoption of this new technology. Production is underway on this Class 0/0+ version of the MP9320 V2.7 reader with a current lead time of four weeks for delivery.
