Wrong. In John Kerry's case war protesting was the issue that won his 1st election. Kerry's original plan was to run as a decorated vet like his idol John Kennedy. He flip flopped that plan upon his return home, when he realized that liberal Mass voters at the time were spitting on patriotic soldiers.
