"People can add and remove a SubjectMark as often as they want. Every time someone adds a thread to their SubjectMarks, the counter is incremented. Likewise, every time they remove it, the counter is decreased. So, the counter shows how many users have the thread SubjectMarked at that given moment.

Not very scientific, to be sure.
