Nadine, does it seem to you to be "quieter" in Israel and Palestine for several weeks? It does to me, and I'm wondering if the lack of funds from Saddam might have something to do with that?


While Arafat is hurting for money, it's the dryup of funds from the Gulf that pinches most, I think. Saddam wasn't the biggest donor. Anyway, I don't think loss of money is the big thing. The security fence makes a bigger difference. With the intifada in its deaththroes, the Pals are turning to internecine combat against PA corruption (though Arafat, the main source of the corruption, is still an untouchable walking flag). The international papers aren't really interested in covering stories that don't involve Israel.
