I was just a kid at the time of the Parris Island tragedy, and I don't remember what my father thought about the DI. He joined up in '38 before the war and he did say that things got crazy when the war started. He said the Marines made good men better and bad men worse. The only Marines I've known were good men, and, I think, great men. Dad was just a non-com with no high school diploma, but he performed several different functions normally filled by officers in other services.
