Investors tend to follow the crowd even in a historical sense. Most important stock market crashes and bottoms have taken place in October historically. But the next one may or may not be in October of any particular year.

No matter what the month market bottoms are marked by high volatility readings, low but improving BP Indices and very bearish surveys like the Investors Intelligence Poll. This takes place after the market has capitulated. The 200 day sma's of the major markets have gotten so low that it does not take too much of a rally for the market to start a new bull run.
