McCain supports healing the wounds of the Vietnam War, which meant conceding first that it had been wrong. You're right. At first McCain did not accept the war hero/anti-war hero Kerry but harbored resentment. He clunt to the fallacy that it was a righteous war.

However as the two worked together and returned to Vietnam to start the normalization process, they came to understand each others' positions and McCain now no doubt understands the grave mistakes our country made leading into and waging the Vietnam War. The extreme rightwing vets groups hate McCain because he stood with Kerry and called for normalization of relations with Vietnam. To the far right, Vietnam is still an enemy, and both Kerry and McCain are "traitors".

Funny though how the far right has no trouble supporting Bush-Cheney, who were both draft-dodgers.
