I must have really stirred up a hornets' nest with my article about Senator John Kerry's resume. You wouldn't BELIEVE the volume of hate- filled e-mails I received today. I tried to respond to each of them--even the one's that merely said, "You're (sic) an a**hole." A couple of them took shots at my intelligence because I'd misspelled the word "hypocrite" (I left off the "e") and took that to mean that I must be a dunce. There were some favorable notes, however. I haven't calculated it precisely, but it seemed to be about 65% negative and 35% positive. It seemed that the DNC's attack machine has been fully mobilized--trashing ANYTHING having to do with the charges leveled by the Swiftboats for Truth organization. Several letters assumed that I had no knowledge of or experience with combat so have no business writing about Sen. Kerry's "heroism" or lack thereof (I have three purple hearts, a bronze star, two ACM's and an Air Medal.) Lots of the negative comments were even LESS literate than my spelling error would indicate I am. A few were obscene. If nothing else, that response showed me that there are a LOT more people reading these opinion pieces than I'd imagined. I don't intend to retract anything I wrote, but I would like to clear up one fact. It seems that the reporter who "broke" the news that LtCdr Elliott had retracted his original affidavit and retreated from his charges in the ad was NOT on the Kerry campaign payroll. He'd just written or co-authored two "biographical" books about Kerry--one of which the Barnes and Noble site had described as a Kerry campaign book (which description they later removed from their site and retracted.) At any rate, it was all phony, anyway. LtCdr Elliott has said today that he did NOT recant his previous affidavit and stood by both the ad and his contributions to the upcoming book "Unfit to Serve," which is, I believe, due out in September. I tried to respond to each e-mail--even the ones that were obscene--as politely as I could (with one exception to which I responded merely with "Cheney you!") A few e-mailers disparaged my "skills as a journalist." I tried to explain to them that I was NOT a "journalist," nor did I ever intend to be, given the low opinion I have of that profession since Vietnam. Anyway, I seemed to have started a firestorm of indignation among the Kerry faithful. One lady sarcastically thanked me for providing the Kerry campaign with more fodder for their effort to unseat President Bush. I replied with, "You're welcome." If this is happening to lowly me, think what it must be like for those 254 brave souls who are the primary target of the Kerry attack machine's full-throated baying. As I said, these are extraordinary men to brave these "slings and arrows" for no real gain other than getting out their version of events surrounding Sen. Kerry's fitness to be Commander in Chief. I admire their guts--again. We've come to dispair the vileness of this Presidential campaign on one or two levels, but, if you'll recall, President Bush hasn't had a single day in office when someone wasn't accusing him of being a lying, cheating, coke- head, alcoholic dunderhead. That's over 3 1/2 years, folks! I suggest to you that few of us would have the strength of character to withstand that and still focus on the business of being President without responding in kind. And it's apparent that the President HASN'T responded in kind. Someone on one of the chat boards has offered a reward for anyone who can produce a quote from the Bush campaign that is truly insulting towards either Kerry or Edwards, and telling the truth about their Senate records doesn't count as an "insult." Any takers?
