Robin Moore, the author of that book, also wrote "The Green Berets".
Robin is the only civilian to ever go through Special Forces training and he did well in his course.

Just got Robin Moore's book "The Hunt for Bin Ladin-- Task Force Dagger" --- from the library.... Don't know where I was when it came out, but looks VERY interesting! Thanks for the referral.
