The horse was a great character in Hidalgo. I saw it on DVD, and the special features revealed that they needed a number of doubles for the horse. They tried different techniques to match color and finally resorted to good old fashioned Hollywood makeup.

The DVD also talked about the production of the movie. The eaten locusts were concocted out of some edible crap, including I think sugar. The scattered locusts were made out of plastic.

I love those special features on DVD. It really gives one respect for the movie making craft. I really don't know how they do it. Hidalgo required that they get some 800 horses down to Morocco for the filming. Half of them were flown. Just the logistics are unbelievable.

I once visited a couple of sets for "The Dukes of Hazard" and met some of the actors and production people. For the simplest kind of scene there must have been fifty people in the studio, 2 or 3 of whom were busier than one armed paper hangers and the rest of whom were completely idle. But when they needed the shirt for Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrain, somebody had moved it. I was able to help because I saw where they put it.

I didn't know newspapers were seeking amateur reviewers. Thanks for the idea. My reviews on SI are pretty sparse, and I would have to put a lot more effort into them to make it interesting for the newspapers.

I saw Hidalgo on DVD last weekend and it was better than I expected. I'm not big on Viggo as a leading man (he seems too passive/soft to me, especially for his role as Aragorn in LOTR), but he wasn't bad and as has been mentioned it is a very pretty movie.

Incidently, it has been proven pretty conclusively that Frank Hopkins made the whole thing up. Also, after the film was shot Viggo purchased the horse that starred in most of the scenes on account of he had grown so attached to it.

There's an interesting movie coming out this weekend called "Hero," it's a chinese movie:
