Nah. More like, Kerry knew the book was coming, and he nevertheless chose to step in a pile of dung.

I suspect had he not made his brief tour in Viet Nam the centerpiece of his campaign, with his silly salute and all at the convention, this story would have made a minor stir and then died down.

Kerry's emphasis on his war months (note I didn't say "war years") and the efforts of the DNC to suppress the ad and discredit and smear the messengers is what will keep this story alive much longer than it otherwise would be.
