Since no one expects complete assimilation of even those who come to this country in search of citizenship, I do not know where you got the impression that Americans expected to change everyone into Xerox- Americans.

What has been lamely called "cultural imperialism" is, in fact, a misnomer referring to the fact that American cultural products are preferred by "the masses". It is widely known, for example, that without quotas, American films would dominate the screens of most European countries, and would dominate even the television screens. In many Third World countries, the appetite is even greater.

Even the "anti- American" French have had to pass content- laws, requiring that the majority of programming on tv and in theaters be either French or European. Their television carries "Friends", "ER", "Law and Order: Third Watch", and several other programs from the States. Recently, I checked on the top five movies currently in French theaters: four of them were American.
