The problem with that is there can be more then one person with the same IP address, and one person can have multiple IP addresses. So checking by IP address will give you both false negatives and false positives.

Thanks Carolyn. I just posed that question on the ask SI thread.

I'm not a computer whiz, but if you know the answer. How does the IP address ensure the same person at a different computer with a different ISP have duel accounts? I'm sure the SI membership fee discourages this from happening, but it's possible?

every time that you log on to the internet you are assigned a ip address by your ISP. Most of the time that is different each time you lon on.

So every time you would reboot your computer you have a different resulting ip address.
