OT: The design alternative has always been clear -- deploy a massive number of simple processor/memory units OR develop extremely powerful processors and operate them separately from memory -- the entire computer industry is based on this latter design, with attempts at "parallel computing" occupying a small footprint on the fringe. Nothing we have designed and operationalized comes close to the true description of "massively parallel" in comparison with the human brain. This is indeed because we do not understand the processing requirements to combine speed with flexibility in a massively parallel environment -- but it is NOT to do with speed itself.
