Seriously, people did a lot of different things in those days
Kerry's mistake is that he brought "those days" too aggressively into these days, believing his own self-created-mythology so deeply that he forgot the questionable parts which left him vulnerable. Had he let Vietnam and medals be just one line on his resumé, an important but not headlining fact, rather than an inyourface assault, would it have served him better? I don't know.
But he shouldn't be surprised that someone noticed his silkpurse smells a little like pigpoo the way he was sticking everyone's nose in it.
