You have stated the exact type of trading I have adjusted to. In fact, one of the best tactics you can use is to place your order, let it sit there for a few minutes and then remove it and lower (or raise-if your selling) buy price. The computers adjust down to your new bid, then you can replace your original order back into the system and "trap" their computers into selling the stock to you. If you don't do this too often, they rarely get wise. If they see you do this all the time, they will adjust the ask lots to stay below your requested quantities. In this case, you will only get partial fills so it's best to only use this once in a while.
