Is there also a faction of Libertarians who oppose the death penalty?

Yes, and I am part of that faction. However, even this faction has subfactions.

Briefly: some believe that there should be no death penalty whatsoever, at any level. Others believe that the decision as to whether or not a crime should be punishable by death (and the actual sentencing of such crimes) should be - in accordance with the Constitutional mandate of keeping the Federal government small - decided and handled at the lowest possible level: state, or even municipal/local.

Still others - in particular, those who straddle the line between Libertarianism and Anarchism - believe that though the state should have no part in capital punishment at any level, individuals should have the right to decide, as social groups, what crimes are punishable by death.

Though it suggests a return to Wild West, these folks argue that such a system would get the state out of the mix while at the same time preserve a notion of the supremacy of life.
