Did you know very young children and those with Asperger Syndrome often take language to its literal extremes? Many children with AS interpret things literally. As a result, comments like 'pull up your socks', 'don't hold your breath', 'jump the gun', 'is here and now' and so on, lead to confusion and sometimes inappropriate responses. It must then be explained why the response was inappropriate and what response would have been correct. This would also assist with improving the social skills of the child. To avoid literal interpretation, childcare professionals should avoid idioms or double entendres and be aware that children with AS do not understand sarcasm or irony.
