"I had a hand in the creation of the Internet." Sounds like Gore is trying to take more credit than he is due.
Taken out of context...

Of course, his statement wasn't so true, but it's been stretched pretty far.

This is an example of GOP browbeating. They repeat this stuff like a mantra until most people believe its true. Its an example of the worst kind of libelous gossip. They have made Gore look like a pompous fool over this issue .

And that's what they did with Clinton and the infamous BJ. They blew it so out of importance until eventually Clinton misstep and screwed himself.

Z, Of course, his statement wasn't so true, but it's been stretched pretty far.

It's one of those examples where saying the wrong thing can really cost you. Yes, I know it's created a political climate where comments are taken way too seriously (for example, the Governator's "girly men" comment).

In this case, however, I think it's fair to take Gore's intentional exaggeration and exaggerate it even further, even if it's just for the purpose of humor. In any case, I've made my point, that Clinton was no more responsible for creating peace and prosperity than Gore was in creating the Internet.

Something that snopes missed is that Gore actually did have a significant hand in making the Internet what it is today. Way back when, the government, in a typical Reaganisque pork barrel project, created a supercomputer laboratory to enable companies and universities to access supercomputing resources. Computers and routers were bought and a communications infrastructure was put into place so that the resources could be accessed readily from most of the country. However, time was expensive, and it was more cost effective to use less powerful computers and just run them for longer period of time, so the project belly-flopped. No one knew what to do with the centers that were set up until Gore helped sponsor a bill to convert the system into a backbone for the Internet. And that helped kickstart the Internet that we all know an love.

I first accessed the Internet over 20 years ago. My very first post (and strangely enough, only that post) can be found on google and is dated 1984-03-30 13:09:32 PST to net.jokes. My experiences with the Internet go way back...
