I think the Israelis are made of much tougher stuff than we are. In Judaism it’s called Tactical Pacifism, you can read more about it here. The tension between the laws dealing with peace, and the obligation to self-defense, has led to a set of Jewish teachings that have been described as tactical-pacifism.
