Mr. Bush, whom people call "conservative" or Mr. Kerry, whom people call "liberal." What do the words "liberal and conservative" mean? At one time, conservative meant less government interference in private lives, less government spending, sort of a "leave the people alone" attitude. Liberal once meant to promote social reform, social programs, sort of the government helping those who were disadvantaged. Over the years, these words have been through the spin machine and now come out with different meanings. Conservatives have now run up the largest federal deficits we have ever known and wanting to somehow control speech, bedrooms, and partnerships. This doesn't sound conservative; this sounds like big brother. Liberal somehow became a dirty word over the years. However, if one considers the meaning of the word, applies it to the American people, it appears, when the chips are down, the American people are liberal. They are generous, open, caring, and are willing to go to any length to help others in need, as demonstrated after September 11, 2001. Since the days of the Vietnam War when many demonstrations took place, the political spin machine has worked very hard at degrading the goodness of the American people. For some reason, this spin machine would like to believe, as a nation, we are greedy, corrupt, and very dumb. This election is a crucial election. Our country is involved in a war which is generating massive amounts of hatred toward us. Whether or not we were justified no longer matters; what matters is that we have troops occupying a country. The people within that country do not want us running their country any more than we would want a foreign country running ours. The wealth gap within our society is growing wider every year with employees working longer hours to earn what they once earned in 40 hours a week. Our constitutional rights are being challenged and we are breeding hate for our neighbors based on their political beliefs. Our society is sliding into something we will no longer recognize if we continue on this path. A statement was made which could foster healing. "These are not Democratic issues or Republican issues, these are American issues." It is time for this country to heal from the division, come together, and demonstrate to the world how great this country can be. Join me in voting for John Kerry and defending it from the assault to our liberties and the right to a decent life the way we individually choose to.
