Medals aren't passed out like party favors
August 15, 2004

THERE ARE medals given out in the service that do not require bravery or heroism. They are called service medals. You get one because you were involved in a certain battle. All you really had to do was show up. Some might say it takes a certain amount of bravery to do just that, show up and put your life on the line.

But medals for bravery or for wounds incurred in battle are not just passed out like so many party favors. The so-called Swift Boat Veterans know this. If, as they say, they served in Vietnam they know that such medals as those awarded John Kerry are not doled out by personal request. He did not ask for them, nor were they awarded unless someone else recommended them, and his superiors agreed that he deserved them.

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that John Kerry served two tours of duty in Vietnam and not only showed up and earned five commendations, but has every one of his shipmates willing to lay their lives on the line for him, as he did for them, speaks volumes. And so does the fact that even after four years of trying, there is still no proof that George W. Bush actually fulfilled his sworn duty to the Texas Air National Guard and this nation, nor has anyone stepped forward to prove that he did -- even though there was a $10,000 reward offered.

I know which candidate I would elect to lead this nation, and which one I'd choose to pull the brews at the next kegger party.

Kerry (leads) Bush 2 to 1 among registered voters younger than 30. Among older voters, the race was virtually tied. About 1 in 6 voters in 2000 was between 18 and 29 years old.
