Terminator to be activated as Bush's secret weapon
By Julian Coman in Washington
(Filed: 15/08/2004)

Senior Republicans are hoping at last to unveil a potentially devastating weapon in the tight presidential battle between George W. Bush and John Kerry: the Terminator on the stump.

I'll be back: can Arnie terminate John Kerry's hopes for election?
Until last week, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican governor of California, had resolutely refused requests to sprinkle Hollywood stardust on the re-election campaign of President Bush. Invitations to tour battleground states were turned down on the grounds that the governor was too busy to travel.

Political commentators pointed in explanation to Mr Schwarzenegger's liberal stance on issues such as abortion and stem-cell research. Since becoming governor, the former film star has also tried to portray himself as a bipartisan figure in California, enjoying support from Democrats as well as Republicans.

Conspiracy theorists suggested that Mr Schwarzenegger resented the lack of overt support from the White House during his own election campaign last September. A sudden change of heart has taken place, however, to the delight of White House strategists, who have inundated the governor's offices with pleading telephone calls.

"I have not scheduled anything at this point," Mr Schwarzenegger said on a radio talkshow, "but it could easily be that I travel to a state or two." A spokesman later confirmed that the governor would be available "if they need him to do something later on".

The apparent reversal has dismayed Democrats, who hoped that his friendship with John Kerry would dissuade the former film star from appearing on the stump for his opponent. In an interview last week, Mr Schwarzenegger said of Mr Kerry: "He's a friend of mine. We go skiing together, ice-skating and hockey playing together. I promised myself that in this campaign, I would never say anything bad about him because he is a terrific human being. I just happen to have a different way of thinking the country should be run."

Republican strategists believe that a highly visible intervention by Mr Schwarzenegger could give a crucial fillip to the Bush-Cheney campaign during the autumn.

He is already booked to deliver a primetime speech at the Republican convention in New York on August 31. But an appearance at a swing state closer to election time would generate at least as much publicity.

One senior Bush campaigner said: "Arnold on the trail, even for a short time, would give everyone a shot of adrenaline. We've been talking of this for a long time and now it seems like it just might happen."

As President Bush toured California last week, he made a point of heaping praise on the man who could introduce a touch of glamour to his campaign.

"We share a lot in common," the president announced, in self-deprecating style to a Santa Monica audience. "We both married above ourselves. We both have trouble with the English language. We both have big biceps. Well, two out of three ain't bad."

Ominously for Mr Kerry, the governor of California sounded equally enthusiastic. "I just want you to know, President Bush," said Mr Schwarzenegger, "how hard I've been working for you here in California."

One local Republican said: "It's been a long time coming, but this relationship could finally be going places."

Thx Mr Lucky, Here's proof positive that Completely-lacking AS has deserted her post at Kerry forum. Life's little serendipities can be satisfying:

Ann:
I want to share with you two PMs that I received:

PM #1
A timeout is fine with me. I just got tired of the StealthVets garbage. I agree she has not engaged in personal attacks.
Go ahead and invite her back

PM #2
I know that the business of running a political thread these days is beyond difficult.
I do think, though, that it's a precarious balance between having a good number of "unbelievers" (for lack of a better term)to argue with, versus a long litany of articles and back-patting that is the inevitable result of throwing every disagreer off the thread.
So, folks like Andrew Cothran and Ann Corrigan, who are articulate and intelligent-- however politically misguided they may be-- should be given a simple cooling-off period, say 24 or 48 hours. Frankly, I think the "GFY"s and namecalling on the part of some of our rougher-around-the-edges posters should be clipped as well (AS is who I think of in this regard). Maybe a public announcement of a new thread header, which states that no one will be allowed to engage in that manner and will be "put in the corner" for a day.....
FWIW, I enjoyed posting to Ann and Andrew-- iut was easy to expose them for their lack of thinking things through.

Now my thoughts:
I have mentioned you as one of the few whoo post on this thread who is anti Kerry but have not been banned because your posts are very civil in nature. Besides the two PM's mentioned above, I also received several PM's in your favor after you were banned. So there is no disagreement on the fact that we all like to have you as a part of our discussion. But at the same time I would suggest that you do not keep beating a issue to detah. Now I may have also done the same as you and I will take care that I do not do so also.

So I am welcoming you back with the hope that you will not only continue to be civil as you always have, but also bring some real thought provoking discussions.<<

My reply:

Chinu,
Thx for the invitation, but the "Kerry Unfit for Command Proof" thread is so busy, there won't be time for both. You are more than welcome to join us at the new forum.
