Actually I have thought about that too. Say for instance a candidate dies for whatever reason after the convention and before election day. I too would like to know if there are rules about it.

I really don't know what they would do.

The logical outcome would be that Edwards became the candidate, and picked a VP. They couldn't deny him the place. Not that he would want it at that point.
