A gravity sensor, when embedded in a portable device, takes just a few milliseconds to realise that it is accelerating under gravity. At that point it issues a coded instruction to the disk drive and the disk drive and the disk drive maker has to have a drive that can then remove its read write heads from the recording media and park them in a safe, rigid position, before the device hits the concrete.

“the gravity sensors also take up a lot of space and those phone guys don’t have an awful lot of space, but the sensors are available now, and they have already appeared in larger devices. We will have a gravity sensor drive early in 2005.” Sony introduced a G-sensor in its iPod killer NW HD1, launched last week, but with a larger disk drive."

That's his SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module). It has one corner removed to fit in its holder under or beside the battery.

My children go to the local shops and buy credits for their phones or can buy over their ATM account as your son does.

The local shops have a terminal (from a company called Alphyra)on which they indicate the network and the amount of credit required, the terminal prints out a receipt with a code which you enter and send on your phone and your credits are immediately updated.
