"Go home and leave us to our own devices!"

Sounds exactly like the words of Saddam Hussien when he kicked out the inspectors and gassed the Shiites and the Kurds.

Saddam was a real democrat, right?

And he should have been left to his own devices.

As for my WWII service, I enlisted in the Army, March, 1947 as soon as I reached the tender age of seventeen. I had to have my parent's permission. World War II had not yet been declared officially over. Thousands of men who had fought in Europe and Asia were ineligible for release because of the strength of force restictions. My enlistment at the age of seventeen made it possible for one of the battle scarred to be released earlier than he would have normally been released. And, since the War had not been declared officially over, my service qualified me as a Veteran of World War II.

Most important to me, though, is that by volunteering in 1947, I finished my tour of duty and was no longer eligible for the draft. Therefore, when the Korean War began in 1950, I was alread a Veteran and therefore exempt from the draft that accompanied that war.

In other words, my veteran's status as a volunteer saved me from being drafted and possibly sent to Korea.

The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform.

Oops! In my post to you (#3982) a part of a sentence at the end of para 2 mysteriously "disappeared" without my being aware of it. Coming after the word "government" there was to be a full stop and the start of a new sentence,

"They should have an opportunity to evolve and to adopt democracy should they feel a need for it."

If that sentence were in place, then my last sentence in the post makes more sense than before.

richnorth, regardless of what anyone says we are not there in the ME to Democratize their countries per se....

it is more to eliminate several countries from terrorist "Sanctuary" status...Iraq being the first and most strategic, if Iraq becomes somewhat Democratized and and serves as a role model to others in the area, so much the better....

I prefer to think of our exploits there as more of an example of USA military might and as such a warning to others in the area to get their acts together or face the same.....

as well it is payback for 9/11, Khobar Towers, USS Cole, the African Embassy bombings, Bali, and on and on and on...

as well we flex our muscle and institute our chosen people to oversee the Iraqi Oil fields, their future production and control....to the benefit of the USA and free world.

as well we are experimenting with and developing new weapon systems that will serve us in the area for the years to come...

as well as we are developing a new Humint base and access to the records and dealings of the other countries of the ME.....

Iran will be next unless we can develop strategic leverage to use against them for future considerations....

therefore the elimination of El Sadr and his Shiite radicals is crucial to our plans...

as well Syria is on our list for future considerations.....

your comments re USA control over the area are well founded and accurate IMO.....

the sooner countries ie Canada, France, Germany, Spain understand the dynamics involved the better off we,in the free world, will all be....
