American involvement in Vietnam began modestly with Eisenhower. Kennedy increased troop strength, and Johnson was responsible for putting the most troops "in country". Nixon decreased the number of troops, while attempting to find a negotiated settlement. In '68, a lot of people voted for him as the "Kerry" candidate, that is, the one who would get us out honorably. I was 12, and supported Humphrey, whose candidacy was harmed by his association with Johnson (as vice- president).

I was against the war, and I am still not "for it", but no one who did not have second thoughts after the fall of Saigon; the reeducation camps; the boat people; Pol Pot; is worth listening to, in my opinion, on the subject.
