I finally found time to upgrade to ZA 5.1.011 today...

Went smoothly for me as well.

Many here use ZA Pro. It adds other security features. But as for the firewall alone, ZA free is top notch. I don't know if there are any benefits to upgrading if all you are looking for is firewall protection.

Maybe a Pro user will chime in.

Is it worth it? It is to me because I like the additional features available with the Pro version. Here's a comparison.

I've had ZApro for a few months. It came bundled with PestPatrol and i was ready to give ZA some $ for a fine product anyway. Both work well.

Anyone tried the Pro version

I have used the pro version of Zone alarm as a firewall for the last two years or so. Current version 5.1.011.000.

It's been OK, but now I am getting another request for an annual subscription of $20. I have decided to dump it and try the freeware version. Screw this gravy train that started with crappy software.

Likewise I had a request for an annual subscription from McAfee Vshield (virus scanner) for DAT updates. Screw them too. Anyway I was under the impression you can get DAT updates for free. I looked about on the download site, and sure enough you can download your DAT updates for free manually (you have to unzip the down load and copy and replace files).

So I think this internet security stuff is a gravy train, and the best thing to do is prevent as little of your money going into it, otherwise it turns into a bubble.
