I did not miss out on the campaign entirely - Bush's tour bus went down the main drag that our little rental house was near, Route 30A, from Niceville to Fort Walton. We got there on Saturday and all the free tickets had been given away by Friday, ten thousand each for three venues, within hours of being available, but we stood on the side of the highway and waved when the entourage went by.

First was a couple of helicopters, then police cars and vehicles full of Secret Service types, then later dozens of motorcycle cops, followed by lots of police cars, then several buses.

Bush stood at the front of the second bus, wearing a blue Oxford shirt with no tie. He had a microphone and said "hey there" to us as he went by. I saw him but did not hear him, I was cheering too loud.

Lots of excitement in that neighborhood, I can tell you. The area is heavily Republican. The cops seemed like they were glad to be there.

But even in that area the bookstores are still prominently displaying anti-Bush books at eye level everywhere.

(We were two houses away from Lance Armstrong, but that's another story.)
