I would have gone home, too. I would have, too. There's a whole nobility continuum to cover what people did back then. Volunteering, going, doing what was expected, and coming home early is nearer to the noble end of the continuum than most of the options and the choices that were made or would have been made if enough pull was had. It's quite enough, IMO. I agree with you that it's not high enough up on the continuum, though, to warrant bragging about. But then I find bragging distasteful even when warranted.
