Well, the medical expenses deduction is simply one of the itemized deductions, along with capital gains deductions, mortgage interest deductions, and so forth. You can use the itemized deductions or the standard deduction, whichever suits you the best.

If you use TurboTax, as I have for as many years, the program plays with various scenarios and picks the one that gives you the best results. No sense of morality or immorality are involved.

I don't see anything ethical or unethical about deciding which set of deductions to use, it's just math. If you have a legal right to it, do it, is my opinion.

In contrast, someone I knew used to take business tax deductions for fishing trips because during his trip he would visit similar businesses to see how they ran things. I suspect he probably would not have survived an audit.
