Merrill Lynch expects DRAM, NAND flash prices to bottom out in 3Q

Spot prices for DRAM and NAND flash will recover slightly after reaching year-low levels in late August of US$3.50-4.00 for DRAM and US$9-10 for 1Gbit NAND flash, according to an August 16 report by Merrill Lynch.

“Although the latest price trend was a bit weaker than our expectations, we believe the worst is now almost in its final stages, due mainly to supply constraints,” the US-based equity investment firm said in the report.

The firm argued that this year’s seasonal outlook for DRAM is better than last year, as prices have already dropped significantly in late July and August. It predicts DRAM prices will increase in September since corporations are buying new PCs and PC OEMs are shipping PCs with more memory.

However, DRAM makers are now holding only 2-3 weeks of inventory, much lower than the historical 4-5 weeks.

Merrill Lynch also said that both Samsung Electronics and Toshiba are holding low inventory of NAND flash. Samsung now holds less than three weeks of inventory while Toshiba has no excess stock.
